Dungeons & Dragons Tactics
Publisher: Atari
Developer: Kuju Entertainment
Genre: Fantasy Turn-Based
Release Date: Aug 14, 2007
Language: English
Type: .CSO
Size: 266 MB
Rarely is sorting through after-battle loot handled as poorly as it is in Dungeons & Dragons Tactics. While this PSP title from Kuju Entertainment is a mostly satisfying look at hardcore role playing, courtesy of slavish attention to D&D's version 3.5 rule set, a spectacularly awkward interface slows the action to a crawl both before and after the long swords come out. Venturing into the bowels of the earth to slay dragons and load up on gold pieces has rarely been so tedious.
Despite the title, D&D Tactics is actually a fairly straightforward turn-based RPG. The emphasis on tactical combat is only about as pronounced as you'd find in something like the old Gold Box games, which actually seems old-school appropriate for the debut of D&D on the PSP. Battles are the primary focus here, making the pace more measured than the standard contemporary RPG. But even though you need to have some appreciation for the 3.5 edition of the pen-and-paper D&D rules to truly enjoy this game, combat intricacies aren't too over-the-top. For the most part, you just need to have a reasonable idea of how to use each character class when it comes to melee and ranged fights, as well as some common sense when it comes to whipping out area-effect spells, such as a fireball. If you're a total newbie at this stuff, at least there are four opening tutorials to get you up to speed.

FIFA Soccer 08
Ripped: None
Format: Iso
Region: Europe
Language: Multi 5 (English)
You've got to hand it to EA Sports--whatever the platform, the developer knows how to take advantage of the hardware. FIFA 08 for the PlayStation Portable offers pretty much everything you could ask of a handheld football game, with local and online multiplayer, multiple game modes, and the ability to transfer data to and from the PlayStation 2. It also plays a solid game of football, and while it's not up to the standard of the home console versions, it's definitely fun to play.
EA Sports has crammed a lot into the game this year, and much of the content is exclusive to the PSP. While there are the usual quick match and tournament options, the supplementary modes really add a lot of longevity to the game. Take the football IQ mode, for example: It's a football quiz where you answer questions to score goals. If you correctly answer successive questions, your team dribbles the ball toward the goal, and if you answer incorrectly it comes back toward your own. Reach the goal and you have to answer two difficult questions in order to score, and if the other team is in a similar position you must give the right answer to save it. The game begins with easy questions about your favourite team and league, then moves on to other leagues and countries as you progress.

Fight Night Round 3
Publisher: EA Sports
Developer: EA Chicago
Genre: Boxing
Release Date: Feb 20, 2006
Language: English
Type: .CSO
Size: 322 MB
EA Sports' boxing franchise makes its handheld debut with Fight Night Round 3 on the PSP. Rather than attempting to cram a full port of the PlayStation 2 version of the game onto the smaller format, EA Chicago has built an entirely different game, specific to the PSP. The incorporation of some of the better elements of the console versions of Round 2 and Round 3, along with the addition of some all-new features, makes the PSP version a competent boxing game that doesn't make too many sacrifices for the sake of portability. Unfortunately, the sacrifices that are made will be sorely obvious to fans of the series, and the resulting experience is somewhat disappointing.
The most glaring absence in Round 3 for the PSP is the dual-analog Total Punch Control configuration that the Fight Night series is known for. Instead, the PSP version of the game relies on the analog stick for moving your boxer around the ring, and the face buttons for throwing punches. It's a difficult setup to get used to because there are a lot more punches and moves than there are buttons on the PSP, and for Fight Night veterans it will definitely feel like a step backwards.

Final Fantasy Tactics: War of Lions
Publisher: Square Enix
Developer: Square Enix
Genre: Fantasy Turn-Based
Release Date: Oct 9, 2007
Language: English
Type: .CSO
Size: 64 MB
While some games don't withstand the test of time, others, like the commonly praised Final Fantasy Tactics, exist in a state of pristine stasis: never changing, yet standing proud at the head of the class, and rarely bested by legions of pretenders to the throne. In other words, you won't need the rose-hued goggles of nostalgia to appreciate Final Fantasy Tactics: War of the Lions, since it's a great game even by modern standards. If you're new to Tactics, you'll find a strategy role-playing game with plenty of deep gameplay and one of the finest stories in a Final Fantasy game to date. If you've already experienced the 1998 PlayStation original, you'll enjoy some nifty additions in this enhanced port, including terrific cutscenes, new character classes, and new playable characters. There are some noticeable issues in the presentation, and some lurking frustrations in the gameplay remain. In the context of such satisfying gameplay, though, the annoyances are easy to forgive--especially considering you can squeeze 60 or 70 hours of quality entertainment out of it.
One of the original's many strengths was its complex, moving story. Almost 10 years later, Tactics expresses more excitement and romance in a single moment than many modern games can manage in their entirety. It helps tremendously that the awkward localization of the original has been replaced with realistic dialogue devoid of grammatical errors (well, except for a few famous ones). There's also another major storytelling enhancement: beautiful, fully acted cutscenes that provide an even greater sense of atmosphere. Calling these scenes cel-shaded wouldn't do them justice, though, since they have a grainy texture to them that resemble a painting more than a cartoon. Suffice it to say, it won't take you long to get caught up in the internal struggles of Ivalice's House of Beoulve, the binding ties of friendship, and the social stigmas of the lower classes.

Madden NFL 08
Publisher: EA Sports
Developer: EA Sports
Genre: Football Sim
Release Date: Aug 14, 2007
Language: English
Type: .CSO
Size: 157 MB
For those who bought Madden NFL 07 on the PSP last year, you are hereby excused from having to buy Madden NFL 08. It's not that the game has suddenly become awful, but this year's installment offers very little that it didn't offer last year. Sure, there's a new challenge mode that replaces the End-2-End mode from last year, a few of the bugs have been cleaned up, and a form of the new "weapons" system from the console versions of the game has made it into the PSP game. But these changes aren't enough on their own to warrant another $40 price tag, and when you factor in some of the holdover issues that still haven't been fixed, not to mention some new problems that debut in this year's game, the value becomes even more dubious. This is still a good, solid handheld football game. It just hasn't evolved much from the good, solid football game that came out last year.
